Léa Stein is a French artist renowned for her layered plastic brooches and bracelets. Often praised as "the most remarkable and innovative designer of plastic jewellery of the 20th century", Lea began making jewellery in 1969.
In the mid-1960s she began crafting brooches in plastics. She and her husband created a method of building up layers from very thin sheets of cellulose acetate. The layers were then baked and cut into shapes. This technique also allowed her to incorporate fabrics into the plastics.
Making these unique plastic brooches was a time-consuming process – producing a single brooch took no less than six months!
