Historical context

The year 1958 is a key moment in the history of the House of Dior. After the death of Christian Dior in 1957, the then only 21-year-old Yves Saint Laurent was appointed creative director. Despite his young age, he honoured Dior's legacy with elegant yet innovative designs. His first collection for Dior, the famous “Trapeze Line” (La Ligne Trapèze), introduced a new, lighter and more youthful silhouette to fashion – a fresh counterpart to the heavy New Look of 1947.
