Description

This brooch touches on a fascinating piece of Dior history and production in the 1950s and 1960s.

The brooch is signed only "Made in Western Germany" and yet comes from the workshops that produced for Christian Dior.

🔎 How does that work exactly?

  • In the 1950s and 1960s, Dior had part of its jewellery made by specialised manufacturers in Germany, notably in Pforzheim – a city renowned as the centre of the German jewellery industry.

  • Many of these jewels were sold through Dior boutiques, but not all pieces always carried the full "Christian Dior" signature. Some were marked only "Germany" or "Made in Western Germany".

  • This happened mainly in the early years, before it became customary for all couture jewellery to carry the standard "Chr. Dior" or "Christian Dior" mark.

🔹 Description of the brooch

  • Period: ca. 1950s

  • Design: cluster-shaped brooch, inspired by a bunch of grapes, composed of cabochon stones in red, blue and green glass (sometimes called “gripoix” style).

  • Details: at the top, sparkling elongated baguette- or navette-shaped crystals that give the impression of leaves or a crown.

  • Materials: gilt metal (usually heavily gilt, the typical quality of Dior in this period).

  • Style: striking and colourful, intended to enhance Dior's couture outfits with jewel-like glamour.

🔹 Background

  • In the 1950s, Christian Dior had his jewellery made by specialised workshops in Pforzheim, Germany (Henkel & Grosse was the most important manufacturer). These brooches were often marked “Christian Dior”, “Chr. Dior” or sometimes only “Made in Germany/Western Germany”.

  • The choice of colourful cabochons and crystals was typical of Dior's New Look period, in which luxury, femininity and a touch of fairy-tale opulence took centre stage.

  • This grape-cluster shape is a rare motif within Dior's jewellery and was often produced only in limited numbers for haute couture clients.

🔹 Historical context

  • After the war there was an enormous hunger for colour, luxury and optimism. Dior's fashion houses satisfied this not only with couture gowns, but also with statement jewellery designed to complete an outfit.

  • Brooches such as this were worn on coats, evening gowns and even on hats. They conveyed glamour and status, especially coming from a fashion house like Dior.

In short:
This 1950s Dior brooch is a rare couture jewel that reflects the luxury and vibrancy of the New Look period. The combination of cabochon glass stones in jewel tones with sparkling crystals and a richly gilt setting makes this piece not just a fashion accessory, but also a small work of art from Dior's early haute couture history.
